This menu of delicious rides and events is brought to you by our friends at Hopworks Urban Brewery. Their support makes BikePortland possible.
Welcome to the first guide of 2016! After what has felt like weeks of rain and snow and ice, we’ve finally got dry streets and tolerable temps. Things are relatively quiet on the bike ride and event front this weekend, but we’ve still got some cool stuff for your perusal. One note, the City of Portland has said they might install the new traffic diverters on SE Clinton this weekend. If that happens, and if you’re wonky enough to care, it might be worth cruising up and down Clinton just to check them out.
What are your plans? Check out our suggestions below…
Saturday, January 9th
Hell of the North (Plains) – 9:00 am in North Plains
Ready for adventure. Join the unofficial, unsanctioned, “Unpaved” riding group for a mostly gravel-road ride over hills and snow and mud in Washington County. 55 miles and about 4,500 feet of climbing await you. GPS route and more details here.
Dean’s Dirty 30 – Benefit for Burnside Skatepark – 8:00 pm to close at Kelly’s Olympian (426 SW Washington)
The legendary skatepark isn’t just for boards. BMX riders thrive there too. This event will showcase the work of over 30 artists inspired by the empty pool skate/BMX theme. The auction will raise money to help the Burnside Skatepark stay awesome for years to come… especially as the area around it develops rapidly. Expect lots of great art and live music. More info here (FB).
Sunday, January 10th
Phantom Horsethief Century – 8:00 am at Rock Around the Clock (2329 NW 23rd)
This is a fantastic century route that will take you from Portland, north to Scappoose, west to Vernonia, and then back home through Washington County. This is an informal ride but it’s being led by an experienced rider (Nathan Jones). An excellent way to shed those holiday pounds! More info here (FB).
Chilled by Bike – 12:00 noon at Colonel Summers Park (SE Belmont and 20th)
From the folks who brought you Grilled by Bike comes Chilled By Bike, Winter Edition in conjunction with Puddlecycle. Don’t expect hard pedaling, but expect hard laughs. Bring a spoon and bowl for some viking stew! Or bring some grillables to grill on the Grillbikes. More info here.
BikeLoudPDX Meeting – 3:00 to 5:00 pm at KBOO Radio (20 SE 8th Ave)
Portland bike activism group will discuss organizing a Clinton diverter celebration, the city’s new parking recommendations, projects for 2016 and more.
